Dear Friends of the Captiva Chapel By the Sea –

We were all sad to close the Chapel season six weeks early due to Covid19.

In addition to missing the last six worship services of the season, including Palm Sunday and Easter, our mid-week Lenten and Holy Week services had to be cancelled. However, Rev. Larry Marshall did a wonderful job of videotaping Sunday and mid-week services and uploading them to the Chapel website (CaptivaChapel.com) for friends near and far to enjoy. Many thanks to Rosemary Marshall for mastering her videotaping skills and to Queenie Viglione for putting it all on the website (and doing so from Italy!).

We also had to forego the Chapel Annual Meeting which was scheduled to be held on April 19 after worship in the Chapel. The contents of that meeting, with Chapel highlights of this 2019-2020 season, are included here.

In addition to the attachments below, highlights include:
  • Decision by the Chapel Board of Associates to share investment gains from the Historic Captiva Chapel Fund with non-profits in our geographical area. The Board of Associates determined it was prudent to allocate as much as $100,000 for specific outreach projects.  To date $30,000 has been expended with the remainder to be allocated at a later date.
  • Together – A Way Forward, a joint effort of island faith communities was formed to develop collective stewardship action for our local environment.
  • An Interfaith Outreach effort of island faith communities convened in the fall and identified isolation of seniors and their caregivers to be a critical need to be addressed jointly by our congregations.
  • The Captiva Chapel By the Sea Board of Associates met in February to update the Chapel Strategic Plan to ensure the Captiva Chapel is well positioned for the future.

I want to thank all of the members of the Captiva Chapel By the Sea Board of Associates* for their leadership commitment to the Chapel this year. I want to especially thank Pat Boris and Pat Slater who are going off the board this year after six years each on the Board. Thanks, also, to Scott McDonald who served on the Board this year.

It was a privilege for me to serve as the President of the Chapel Board of Associates this year. Many thanks to Chip Roach, Mike Boris, and Mike Bennett for their wisdom and leadership on the Chapel Executive Committee. It is with gratitude that I turn over leadership to Mike Bennett to be President of the Chapel Board for the next two years.

Many thanks to Rev. Larry Marshall and his wife, Rosemary, for quickly engaging in the life of the Chapel in this their first of three years of ministry at the Chapel. Larry’s worship services were always uplifting and centered on Christ’s love for His people. Larry and Rosie’s creativity with video allowed us to continue to worship together as a Chapel family when the world changing events caused by coronavirus necessitated our staying home and away from each other.

The Chapel website, CaptivaChapel.com can keep us connected during the off-season, including a link to the Chapel Prayer Chain for prayer requests. Also link by facebook.com/CaptivaChapelByTheSea/

In closing, the Captiva Chapel By the Sea depends on the generosity of the Chapel family to support our worship ministry, mission outreach, and maintenance of our buildings and grounds. You will find a “Donate” link on the Chapel website, CaptivaChapel.com. Thank you for your financial support during the Chapel season and over the summer.

Stay well. We look forward to seeing you all when the Chapel season resumes November 8th, 2020. None of us know now what the “new normal” will look like when the next Chapel season begins but we have confidence in God’s leading and His love, and care.

Sincerely,
Nathalie Pyle

Chapel by the Sea Year End Report, Rev. Larry L. Marshall
April 20, 2020

Worship
After a few Sundays getting used to conducting worship for those sitting inside and outside, I thought we settled into a good rhythm. People seemed to be attentive and engaged which was quite helpful to the preacher. Also, I want to thank Lynne Dugan for providing heart-felt music along with talented guests that added so much to each service.  Additional services provided the opportunity to prepare for special holidays; Thanksgiving eve, Christmas Carol Sing, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lenten Taize, and Maundy Thursday/Good Friday. Unfortunately, because of the Corona Virus Pandemic, we decided to suspend Worship after March 15. Since that time, we have been able to videotape all services. A huge thank you goes to Rosemary Marshall and Queenie Viglione in making all this possible.

Weddings, Memorial services and Baptisms
I officiated 15 weddings, and unfortunately had to cancel three weddings scheduled for April. It was very rewarding for me to get to the know the Brides and Grooms along with their families. Most everyone carried a special Love for Chapel by the Sea as did the families of those who celebrated the life of a loved one. There was a total of 3 Baptisms and two others that had to canceled.

Bible Studies
On average, 8 to 10 persons regularly attended our Tuesday morning Bible Studies. All participants seemed eager to learn more about God’s Word and how it applies to everyday life.

Mission Outreach
I was very moved and enlightened when we visited some of the non-profit organizations supported by Chapel by the Sea. Our Church is well respected because of its giving Spirit. Clear evidence of this comes from our following through on our pledge to commit additional dollars to agencies that are making a difference in the lives of people who are in desperate need.  It is also important to mention the Chapel’s involvement with inter-faith ministries. It is rewarding to work with persons of different faith backgrounds. In spite of our differences we join our hearts to care for people in need and Gods creation. Thank you for supporting the inter-faith council and  “A Way Forward. “

Community Care
On the first Monday of each month a few of us travel to Shell Point to have lunch and dialogue with those who have a long history with Chapel by the Sea. Our conversations are always spirited and enlightening. Also, thank you to Pat Boris and others who believe in the power of prayer. Even though we are often separated by miles, our hearts are joined in sharing the Love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

In conclusion, it has been a challenging but rewarding first year. Sometimes adversity opens new doors. It was very disappointing not to be able to Worship together on Easter Sunday. But many of you have enjoyed the services online.  This is a work in progress but might be helpful especially to those who may not be able to attend Worship on Sundays.  May we continue to thank God from Whom all Blessings flow.

Treasurer’s 2020 Annual Meeting Report…submitted by Mike Boris

Captiva Chapel-by-the-Sea   April, 2020

Revenue from current operations are projected to equal annual operating expenses.
In spite of ending services 6 weeks early, increased giving has kept up with increased operating expenses.

Spending on current operations continues to approximate in equal parts:
           Ministry and music
Maintenance of buildings and grounds and
           Mission outreach
Balance Sheet now has over $1 million in Endowment and Reserves.
       SWFCF endowment   $266,000
Historic Captiva Chapel Fund $932,000 (includes $300k Storm Reserve, and $200k Cemetery Fund)

The Board will distribute (when needed) up to 4% annually to cover capital expenditures and extraordinary expenses.
Over the past 4 years, well over $100,000 has been distributed from the HCCF for capital projects.
In addition, the Board recently committed to distribute an incremental $100,000 to specific outreach projects.

Looking forward…
We strive to have regular on-going giving cover current operating expenses and look to the generous support of our Chapel family, and income from the Historic Captiva Fund to cover capital projects and other unmet needs.

Capital expenditure plans include a comprehensive look at our long-term needs, and anticipate some major investments and upgrades to our properties in the next 5 years.

Our Chapel community has, and continues to share it resources to make this historic place secure, and assure its’ continued mission to serve Captiva and its’ visitors. We thank you.
